Herefordshire Golf Club - 22nd April 2012
Doubles competition

Following the success of the format change in 2011, it was great to see the Doubles Competition strongly supported again this year. Johnnie V and his guest were on point duty as a lonely pair heading off into the hills followed by 14 pairs. John graciously aptly playing the role of “floater” dipped out for a friendly round as we had odd numbers.

The morning started with the usual friendly welcome at Ravens Causeway as battle commenced to bulk up with a fine Full English Breakfast. The new lightweight Beefy looked a little out of place  carrying 4000 calories on a plate. Tension built as the draw was made from a list of “golfers” and “duffers”, the cut off point being 16.5. Strange seeing Keith Taylor, Rob Davies and the handicap fixer in the duffers, the latter carrying an unbelievable 18.1 handicap. The defending champions were paired in the opening group, followed by the other favourites of Tim Kilby and Kev Lloyd......a match made in heaven surely. Both got their wish to be paired together having expressed  a level of man-love only seen before on Brokeback Mountain.

The course was in great condition as usual and always proves a good test without the addition of weather providing a stern test with a mixture of blustery winds and hail storms. The defence of the title for Pete and Ray was short lived, being conquered by the course by some 5 holes. A similar fate was suffered by the bulk of the field, with only 3 pairs defeating the combination of course and mother nature.

Gaining entry to the Angel Cup, the top 3 pairings were as follows

3rd Place, Nev Green and Ron “Thor” Amphlett. Returning a fine score of +2 despite some niggle when Nev pronounced Rons putting stroke longer than his backswing with a driver. Nev's putting stood the test as he proceeded to drain putts of any distance left by his partner. Nevs all round game was excellent and Ron defied his handicap by showing a deft touch with the wedge to contra his hammer blows with the putter

2nd Place, Ian Brazier and Rob Davies. A year of handicap protection by Rob, made this a dangerous pairing receiving an obscene number of 14 shots. While Ian was often distracted preparing speech notes in the absence of his shorter Captain, Rob led the pair to a very respectable +2, sneeking runner up on countback with a superior run on the inward 9.

1st Place, Dave Brierley and Vic Hammond. I guess the bookies saw this coming, with Beefy having been victorious here before and having a great liking for the venue. Today partnered by Vic off his fantasy like 18.1. As one wise owl commented, “does Vic sleep with the handicap Secretary?”, every night we answer, every night. A fine round by this strong pairing with a 3hole win over the course enough to pip the chasing pairs.

A great day out, agreed all, the format again coming in for universal praise. Other notable moments, Roy and Moggy taking 3 stabs from a tee shot holding “nearest the pin”. Marshy and Simon collapsing from a potential winning score of +3 after 12 holes to a -3 finish by losing the last 6 holes.

Many thanks to all involved and look forward to Captains Day, Dave we missed you, I am sure you would have loved the 20 foot periscope on the 5th tee allowing you to see over the hill.
