Pershore Golf Society
Sue Sheppard Memorial Trophy
This was a wonderful day and a first for The Society.
Ron, Dennis and Roy Amphlett lost their sister Sue to cancer in September 2011. Sue was the life and sole of any party and had a “can do attitude. She was also a very keen sports lady – mainly running and hockey.
Ron donated a beautiful “Wedgewood Blue” Trophy to mark this inaugural event and the sub-committee was successful in obtaining varied and generous local sponsorship, superb support from Evesham Golf Club and a mix of players who were new to PGS golf days.
Following a friendly and efficient registration and photo process 14 four man and lady teams teed off on a shot gun start on a very warm July afternoon. The format was stableford with best two scores off three-quarter handicaps with all scores on the par threes to count.
Despite each par three having inviting hole in one prizes – a car, a golf holiday, hotel breaks – these holes proved the downfall of most teams as often only 2 or 3 points were scored when in all honesty 6/8 points for each par 3 should have been the target.
The winning score was a credible 87 points. This was achieved by Kevin Lloyd’s team who much to the “delight (not)” of Brian Marshalls EGC team all haled from The Vale Golf Club. Brian and his team were second. Third was the team lead by Matt Sailes and Keith Taylor – a deserved reward for Keith who was a brilliant and tenacious Chairman of the sub committee.
Whilst such as the car was not won there was a nearest the pin on the 18th which David Fraser won (nearest being 12 feet from the pin – which said a lot about the rest of us!). The longest drive was won by Wayne Collins who narrowly pipped Vivien Cranton.
After a welcome and relaxing meal the raffle draw and presentations were made by Neil “Shep” Sheppard and it was good to see other member of Sue’s family support the event.
In the context of this report there are so many people to thank and all the sponsors are listed at the bottom of this page. However Evesham Golf Club and Winstanley Engineering as hole in one sponsors deserve extra special thanks.
It was a great and successful day. Over £2600 was raised to be shared between MacMillan Cancer Support and Pancreatic Cancer UK. A BRILLIANT result. A Big Thank You to everyone....
